Your domain name is the foundation of your online identity

Your domain name, such as yourcompany.co.ug, yourschool.ac.ug or yourbrand.com, is the address people type to find your website. It is also the part after the @ in every business email you send. Change it later and you have to reprint letterheads, update every directory listing and rebuild search visibility. Choosing well, registering it in the right name and renewing it on time are among the least glamorous but most important decisions an organisation makes online.

Domain registration was one of the first services we offered when we started Generation Solutions in 2017. Today we help organisations choose suitable names and register them across Ugandan and international extensions. We also transfer existing domains, renew them reliably, and manage the DNS records that connect domains to websites and email.

We don’t show a domain availability checker on this page — on purpose.

Availability and requirements can change, and some Ugandan extensions need supporting documents. Instead, send us the names you’re considering using the form below or WhatsApp, and we’ll confirm what’s available and what’s needed to register it.

Domain extensions we register

Your extension (the part after the dot) signals where you are and what kind of organisation you are. These are the ones our clients ask about most:

ExtensionTypically used byNotes
.ugAny organisation wanting a short Ugandan addressUganda’s country code domain. Clearly signals a Ugandan presence.
.co.ugBusinesses and companies operating in UgandaThe long-established choice for Ugandan commercial organisations.
.or.ug, .ac.ug, .sc.ug, .go.ugOrganisations, academic institutions, schools and government bodiesRestricted categories with eligibility rules; you usually need supporting documents. We confirm current requirements before applying.
.comBusinesses with regional or international customersThe most recognised extension worldwide; short names are often taken.
.orgNGOs, foundations, associations and clubsWidely trusted by donors and partners for non-profit organisations.
.netTechnology services and networks; alternative to .comUseful when the .com version is unavailable.

We can also help with other extensions where supported. Registry rules and documentation requirements change from time to time, so we always confirm them at the point of registration rather than relying on a static list.

How to choose a good domain name

A good domain is easy to say over the phone, easy to spell after hearing it once, and short enough to fit comfortably in an email address. Practical guidance we give clients:

  • Keep it short and clear. If you have to spell it out every time, it is too complicated.
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers unless they are part of your brand — they are easily misheard.
  • Match your organisation’s name or the name customers actually use for you.
  • Check for confusion with existing organisations and trademarks.
  • Consider registering variations — for example both .co.ug and .com — to protect your name and redirect them to one site.
  • Think about email. Say “firstname@yourdomain” out loud. Does it sound right?

Not sure which to choose? Our domain consultation helps you shortlist options and check availability before you commit. There’s more advice in our guide, what to consider before registering a domain in Uganda.

Domain ownership: protect your organisation

We regularly meet organisations whose domain a former employee, a relative or a previous web designer registered years ago. They used their own name and email address. When that person becomes unreachable, renewing or moving the domain can be very difficult.

When we register a domain, we name your organisation as the registrant and use contact details your organisation controls. We keep a record of renewal dates and explain who holds which access. If someone else holds your domain, we can help you recover it.

Quick check:

Does someone in your organisation know where you registered your domain, when it expires and how to log in? If not, ask us to help you find out before it becomes urgent.

DNS explained in plain language

DNS (the Domain Name System) is the directory that tells the internet where to find each service on your domain. Owning a domain is one thing; its DNS records are what make it useful. The most common records are:

RecordWhat it does
A / AAAAPoints your domain to the server that hosts your website.
CNAMEPoints one name to another, e.g. www to your main domain.
MXTells other mail servers where to deliver email for your domain.
TXT (SPF, DKIM, DMARC)Proves which services may send email for your domain, reducing spam and impersonation.
TXT (verification)Confirms ownership to services such as Microsoft 365 and Google Search Console.

A single wrong DNS change can take a website offline or stop email arriving. We document records before changing them and make changes at sensible times. This is closely related to our business email and web hosting services.

Transferring a domain to Generation Solutions

Transferring a domain changes who manages it, not who owns it. The process differs between international extensions such as .com and Ugandan extensions, but generally looks like this:

  1. Confirm ownership and access

    We check who the registered owner is and whether you can access the current registrar account or contact.

  2. Record existing DNS

    Every current DNS record is copied so the website and email keep working after the transfer.

  3. Unlock and authorise

    The domain is unlocked at the current registrar and, for most extensions, an authorisation code is obtained.

  4. Submit the transfer

    We submit the transfer request and you approve it if the registry requires confirmation.

  5. Verify and document

    We confirm the transfer, check that services are working and record the new renewal date.

Some transfers complete within hours; others take several days depending on the extension and the current registrar. We keep you informed throughout.

Recovering a domain registered by someone else

If a former staff member, a relative or a previous web designer registered your domain, you may not have the login. You may not even know which registrar holds it. Recovery is often possible, but it takes patience. We help by:

  • looking up the domain’s public registration data to identify the registrar and expiry date;
  • checking whether the registrant listed is your organisation or an individual;
  • contacting the current provider on your behalf, with your authorisation;
  • preparing the supporting documents registrars and registries typically ask for, such as company registration papers and a letter on letterhead;
  • transferring the domain into your organisation’s name once we confirm control.

Act before the expiry date if you can. Once a domain lapses, recovery gets harder, and eventually the registry may release the name to the public.

Connecting your new domain to email and a website

A new domain does nothing until someone sets up its DNS. For most clients we set up the following in one sitting:

  1. Email first

    MX records point to your chosen email platform — standard email hosting or Microsoft 365 — and SPF, DKIM and DMARC records are added so your mail is trusted.

  2. Website

    A and CNAME records point the domain and its www version to your hosting, with one version chosen as the main address.

  3. Verification records

    TXT records prove ownership to services such as Microsoft 365 and Google Search Console.

  4. Documentation

    We record every entry, so whoever manages the domain next can see what each record does.

If you are also launching a website, see our website design service; for email, see business email hosting.

Never lose a domain to a missed renewal

When a domain expires, the website and email that depend on it stop working — sometimes within hours. Leave it too long, and the registry may release the name for anyone to register. It happens more often than you might think, usually because renewal reminders were going to an inbox nobody checks.

  • we record renewal dates for every domain we manage;
  • we send reminders well before expiry to a contact you nominate;
  • you can renew for one or more years at a time where the registry allows;
  • we can renew all your related domains together to simplify administration.

Enquire about domain registration

Tell us the domain names you’re considering (several options is helpful) and whether you need hosting or email with them. We’ll confirm availability, explain any requirements for restricted Ugandan extensions and send a quotation.

Leave blank if you don’t have one yet.

List your preferred names and extensions, e.g. kampalabakery.co.ug, kampalabakery.com. Mention if you are transferring an existing domain.

Domain registration questions

What documents do I need to register a .co.ug domain?

Requirements depend on the extension and current registry rules. Restricted categories such as .ac.ug, .sc.ug and .go.ug usually need proof of eligibility. We confirm exactly what you need before we apply.

Can I register a domain without a website?

Yes. Many organisations register their domain first to secure the name and set up email, then build the website later.

How long does domain registration take?

Many international domains register within minutes once confirmed. Some Ugandan extensions take longer, especially when the registry must review documents.

Can I move my domain from another provider?

Yes. We handle transfers and preserve DNS records so your website and email continue working.

Who will own my domain?

Your organisation. We register domains with your organisation as the registrant.

Why don’t you list domain prices?

Registry costs and promotions change, and many clients combine domains with hosting or email. We confirm current pricing in your quotation.
