The established address for companies in Uganda

For many years, .co.ug has been the natural choice for companies doing business in Uganda. The “.co” stands for commercial, and the “.ug” for Uganda, so an address like kampalasuppliers.co.ug tells customers at a glance that they are dealing with a Ugandan business. Banks, telecoms operators, manufacturers, retailers and professional firms across the country use .co.ug addresses for their websites and email, and customers have learned to recognise them.

That familiarity is the main reason to choose .co.ug. It reads as established and local, and it suits businesses whose customers are mainly in Uganda. It is also often available when someone took the same name in .com long ago.

This page explains when .co.ug is the right choice, what registration involves and how we look after .co.ug domains for our clients. For the shorter direct form, see .ug domain registration; for all extensions, see domain registration in Uganda.

Who .co.ug suits best

Registered companies

Limited companies and partnerships trading in Uganda that want an address customers instantly recognise as local.

Retailers and distributors

Businesses whose customers are in Uganda and who want local credibility on signage, receipts and delivery vehicles.

There’s no single right answer. Many companies register their name in .co.ug and .com, use one as the main address and redirect the other, so customers reach them whichever they type.

Choosing a .co.ug name that works

Because .co.ug is already a slightly longer ending, the part before it should be as short and clear as possible. Practical guidance:

  • use your trading name, not necessarily your full legal name — “abcmotors.co.ug” rather than “abcmotorsandgeneralsupplieslimited.co.ug”;
  • avoid “ltd”, “limited” or “uganda” in the name, since .co.ug already says both;
  • avoid hyphens unless your brand genuinely uses them;
  • test it as an email address: “accounts@abcmotors.co.ug” is easy to dictate over the phone;
  • check it doesn’t resemble a better-known company’s name, which causes confusion and potential disputes.

Registration requirements

Because .co.ug is meant for commercial entities, the registry may ask for documents at registration. Typical information includes:

  • the company’s registered name, as shown on its registration documents;
  • a certificate of incorporation or business registration;
  • the company’s physical address and telephone number;
  • an administrative contact and an email address the company controls;
  • in some cases, a letter of request on company letterhead.

The registry updates its requirements from time to time, so we confirm exactly what your registration needs before we submit it.

How we register a .co.ug domain

  1. Check names

    We check your preferred names in .co.ug and suggest alternatives if needed, along with matching .ug and .com availability.

  2. Confirm requirements

    We list the documents needed and review them before submission to avoid delays.

  3. Register in the company’s name

    The company is recorded as registrant, with contact details it controls.

  4. Follow up

    We follow up on any queries until the registration is complete.

  5. Connect services

    DNS is configured for your website and email, including authentication records.

  6. Track renewal

Professional email on your .co.ug domain

For most companies, the first thing a new domain is used for is email. Moving staff from personal webmail to addresses like sales@yourcompany.co.ug is one of the quickest ways to look more established. We set up email on your .co.ug domain using business email hosting or Microsoft 365, configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC so messages are trusted, and set up phones and laptops for every user.

A website to match

A domain without a website is a missed opportunity: customers who see your address on a vehicle or invoice will type it in. Even a small, well-built site with your services, location, phone numbers and a WhatsApp button turns that curiosity into enquiries. See website design in Uganda and web hosting.

Registering several related domains

Companies often hold several domains: the main .co.ug, a .com, product or brand names, and occasionally a campaign domain. Managing them together — one renewal schedule, one set of DNS records documented in one place — avoids expired domains and conflicting configurations. We can consolidate domains held with different providers under one arrangement, without changing who owns them.

Pick one main address.

Point every extra domain at your main website with a permanent redirect. Separate copies of the same site on different domains confuse customers and split search visibility.

When your company changes

Businesses rename, merge, restructure and change directors. Each can affect your domain. If the company’s registered name changes, update the registrant details. If the director listed as the contact leaves, update the contact details so renewal notices still arrive. If the company rebrands, you may want a new domain with redirects from the old one. We handle these updates so the domain record always reflects the business as it is.

Protecting your .co.ug domain

  • keep registrant and contact details current, with a role email address rather than one person’s mailbox;
  • limit who can make changes to the domain and DNS;
  • renew well before expiry, ideally for multiple years;
  • add SPF, DKIM and DMARC records to make email impersonation harder;
  • watch for look-alike domains used in scams, and act quickly if one appears.

Using your .co.ug address in marketing

Your domain appears far beyond your website: on business cards, signboards, branded vehicles, receipts, uniforms, packaging, radio adverts and social media profiles. Consistency matters. Decide how you will write it — usually lower case, without “www” or “https://” on printed materials — and use the same form everywhere. Make sure every address you print actually works, including the www version, and that any short campaign addresses redirect to the right page. A domain that customers can remember after hearing it once on the radio is worth more than one that only looks good on paper.

Subdomains for departments and services

Once you have a .co.ug domain, you can create subdomains at no extra registration cost — for example shop.yourcompany.co.ug for an online store, careers.yourcompany.co.ug for recruitment or portal.yourcompany.co.ug for a client login. Subdomains keep everything under one brand while allowing different systems to run separately. Each needs its own DNS records and SSL certificate, which we configure and document as part of DNS management.

Expanding beyond Uganda

If your company grows into Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania or South Sudan, you may want a local address in each market as well as your .co.ug. Each country’s domain has its own registry rules, and some require a local presence. A common approach is to keep .co.ug for Ugandan customers, use a .com as the regional hub, and add country domains only where they bring real benefit. Planning this early avoids a scramble when expansion happens, and stops someone else registering your name in a new market first.

Your .co.ug launch checklist

  • domain registered with the company as registrant and a role email as contact;
  • website live at both the bare domain and www, with one redirecting to the other;
  • HTTPS working on every page;
  • business email working on staff phones and computers;
  • SPF, DKIM and DMARC records published and tested;
  • Google Business Profile and social media profiles updated with the new website address;
  • letterheads, email signatures, invoices and signage updated;
  • renewal date recorded and a reminder set well in advance.

We work through this list with every company whose domain we register, so we leave nothing half-finished.

Renewals

Your .co.ug domain must be renewed before it expires, or the website and email stop working. We record renewal dates, send reminders well in advance to a contact you nominate and renew on instruction. For businesses that prefer not to think about it, renewing for several years at a time where available is the simplest protection. See domain renewal.

Your next step

Share your company’s trading name and a few domain ideas. We will confirm availability, list the company documents the registration may need, and set up the domain with business email and website records so it is useful from the day it is registered.

.co.ug domain questions

Do I need a registered company to get a .co.ug domain?

.co.ug is meant for commercial entities, and the registry may ask for documents. We confirm current requirements before applying.

Should I choose .co.ug or .ug?

Both signal a Ugandan presence. .co.ug is long established for companies; .ug is shorter. Many businesses register both and redirect one to the other.

Can I move my existing .co.ug domain to you?

Yes. We handle the transfer and keep your website and email running throughout.

Can I use my .co.ug domain with Microsoft 365?

Yes. We verify the domain in Microsoft 365 and configure email records.

What happens if my company name changes?

Yes, we can update the registrant details. If you rebrand, we can register a new domain and redirect the old one.

Can I register a .co.ug domain before my company is fully registered?

Requirements depend on current registry policy. If your company registration is in progress, tell us and we’ll advise on the options, which may include registering another extension first.

Can I create email addresses for every staff member?

Yes. Once you register the domain, you can create as many addresses as your email platform and plan allow, plus shared role addresses.

How much does a .co.ug domain cost?

A .co.ug domain costs UGX 120,000 a year with us, registered in your company’s name. See our domain prices page for every extension.
